When it comes to home interiors, the bathroom often gets forgotten about. Whilst it needs to be functional and easy to clean, your bathroom doesn’t have to be boring. There are plenty of easy and inexpensive changes you can make to breathe a new lease of life into the space.
Imagine you’re coming home after a long, busy day. What could be better than a nice relaxing bath in a peaceful and tranquil setting? Make some simple changes to your bathroom décor and create a space you can escape to.
A place for everything and everything in its place
Although it may seem obvious, a tidy space really can make a big difference. We use our bathrooms day in and day out, and as such, they come with a lot of resident clutter. Investing in some bathroom storage is a great way to keep the room looking neat and tidy.
Find units with drawers and cupboards so you can keep everyday essentials tucked away neatly. Make sure the furniture is easy to wipe down and resistant to moisture and damp.
Another great idea for the bathroom is storage baskets. Perfect for having toiletries close to hand but displayed neatly. Plastic baskets are the easiest to clean whilst wicker baskets bring to mind a nautical seaside setting. If you’re living with others, why not have a basket each so you can organise belongings easily?
New towels, new look!
If it’s time for a fresh look, then a new set of towels is a great first start. An easy way to add some personality or a splash of colour to your room. We usually choose a neutral colour for our bathroom fittings and tiles, why not contrast these against a brightly coloured set of towels?
Keeping your fresh towels folded and on display is a great way to decorate with everyday items. The colour of your towel can be reflected in your other bathroom items to keep a colour scheme. Although it may seem obvious to get the whole towel set in one colour, why not try alternating colours and sizes? For example, you could have your bath sheets and hand towels in one colour, whilst your flannels and medium towels could be in a complementary or contrasting colour.
Unwind with soothing scents
You may relate the bathroom to bad smells, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Our sense of smell is powerful and can be the perfect way to encourage relaxation. Soothing scents such as lavender, warm vanilla and ylang-ylang are perfect for an at-home spa experience.
Placing a quality reed diffuser on your shelves will keep the room smelling fragrant and fresh throughout the day. Not only is this great for when you have guests, but it makes each bathroom trip feel a little more uplifting.
When you need to take some time out and really unwind, light some scented candles in your bathroom. Candles work on so many levels, providing you with atmospheric lighting and fragrance when lit and an attractive decoration when not. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and take care when using open flames.
Put your own stamp on it
So, your bathroom is looking tidy, you’ve got nice fresh towels, and everything smells great. What’s next? You can add a dash of personality to the room easily with a selection of wall art. This is another great way to tie in your colour scheme or create an eye-catching contrast.
This doesn’t need to be expensive; you can find very reasonably priced prints and canvases on the market. Keep it cool and contemporary with some monochrome prints or liven up the space with a colourful canvas. If you’re a creative person, why not have a go at creating some of your very own artwork?
Elevate your everyday essentials
Switching out your regular handwash for a refillable soap dispenser not only looks stylish but has a positive environmental impact. Matching up your soap dispenser, toothbrush holder and soap dish can give an elegant touch to your sink area.
Bathrooms can often feel clinical, try adding in some trinkets and ornaments for a homely finishing touch. Matching colours and themes through all your bathroom décor will give a coordinated feel to the room. Why not try a new plush bathmat in a complementary shade to balance out the space – and keep your toes toasty!
When in doubt, add plants
As we know, houseplants have a whole heap of benefits for our wellbeing and indoor air quality. Did you know there are many indoor plants suitable for the bathroom? In fact, the higher moisture and humidity levels in the average bathroom are actually preferred by many plants.
If your bathroom is low on sunlight and you are looking for something low maintenance, try Bamboo. Snake plants and spider plants are other varieties that thrive in a humid atmosphere. They also improve the air quality and help to relieve stress – what’s not to love?
Create your own indoor oasis and make a calming space to retreat to after a busy day. No matter the size of your bathroom, a few small changes can make a big difference.
