Jobs for the Garden this Winter

Planting jobs

• Plant Tulip bulbs in pots and borders, covering them with at least twice their depth of soil or compost.

• Plant bare-root hedging, roses, trees and shrubs before the weather turns cold.

• Cut down faded perennials that are looking tatty, then mulch the surrounding soil.

• Use cloches to protect winter peas, beans etc. Be sure to leave the ends open as ventilation is essential.

• Plant garlic, shallots and onions in free draining soil or raised beds, then cover in fleece.

Greenhouse jobs

• Insulate the greenhouse walls and roof with bubble polythene.

• Scrub down greenhouse staging, glazing and the framework with disinfectant.

• Wash out empty pots and trays and store them neatly ready for spring use.

• Make sure that tender plants are brought in from the cold and fleeced if necessary.

• Propagate perennials including phlox, oriental poppies and Verbascums by taking root cuttings.

Lawn Care jobs

• Aerate lawn if conditions allow, as soil compaction is a cause of turf deterioration and moss invasion.

Clear up any fallen leaves as the grass may become damaged if not removed.

• Brush off worm casts (or treat the cause of the problem.)

• If the lawn needs cutting do so but on a higher setting.

• Keep an eye out for Lawn disease, as the grass may need treating with a fungicide.

All tools and equipment to keep your garden in tip-top condition can be purchased at your local Cherry Lane garden centre.
