Growing Sunflowers

Sunflowers are a beautiful and very popular plant to grow and they say ‘SUMMER’ like no other plant.

Here are some simple tips to follow when growing sunflowers.

• Choose a sunny spot to plant your sunflower. They grow best in a location that has direct sunlight for around 6-8 hours per day.

• Plant in a well-drained area, prepare your soil by digging an area of 2-3 feet in circumference to a depth of around 2 feet.

• Sunflowers feed a lot so make sure your soil is rich in nutrients.

• If you can, plant to seeds in a place that’s sheltered from strong winds, for example along a fence.

• The best time to sow sunflower seeds is after the danger of spring frosts.

• Adding some fertilizer mix when planting your sunflower seeds can help encourage strong root growth to protect them from breaking in winds.

• Once your sunflower starts to become more established, water it deeply about once a week (unless its exceptionally wet or dry).

• If your sunflower grows quite tall, we would suggest supporting it with a bamboo sticks to help prevent it from breaking.
