Autumn can be a busy time in your gardening, it’s a time to start clearing away decaying vegetation of the summer and begin the preparation for the cold winter months ahead. We’ve included our top tips of things to do during this period.
1) Greenhouse Autumn Clear-out
Since you’ll be cleaning the outside of your greenhouse, it would make sense to sort out the inside of it as well, this would help reduce overwintering pests and diseases. Before sweeping out any plant debris, start by removing the plants. Make sure you disinfect the greenhouse paths and staging and inside of the glass as well. Once you’re done disinfecting and clearing the greenhouse, you should ventilate it thoroughly over the next couple of days.
2) Greenhouse Shading
September is just around the corner, which means our days are becoming much shorter and the night increasingly longer. In order to be able to get the most of the sunlight for your plants, remove any shade paint you may have in your greenhouse. In order to remove it, you just need to use some hot water and scrub it off. It should come off fairly easy.
3) Maintain your lawn
If your lawn isn’t looking too great, don’t worry! This time of year is perfect to give it the TLC it deserves. Remove any old grass clippings and mossing by using a spring tined rake, this can be added to your compost heap. If you happen to have too much moss, you can use a moss killer to begin with.
4) Sort Out Your Compost Bin
When you’re sorting out your garden after Summer in time for Autumn, you suddenly notice the amount you’ve put in your compost bin. This time of year is perfect to sort out last year’s compost as it can be used in your garden to make more space in the bins for this year’s garden waste. However, if you see that you haven’t quite filled it up enough it can be turned into a decomposition to create a new heap.
5) Take Care Of Your Equipment
There will always be some wear and tear with any equipment you use for your garden, the most important thing is to make sure you take care of it so it lasts you for longer and still does the job well. Before you say goodbye to your lawn mower for the next few months, it would be worth servicing it to ensure it’s in great condition when you start using it again during Spring. Any shears and secateurs you have may need sharpening. Forks, spade and other tool you have most likely could use a good wash if you haven’t done so already. Just make sure you don’t cause any rust, so dry them thoroughly and oil the metal parts in order to keep them for longer. The wooden handles can be cleaned as well if you use something like linseed oil.
