Welcome to January, a month brimming with possibilities for your garden! Despite the chilly weather, there's much to be done to prepare for the vibrant seasons ahead. From pruning dormant trees and shrubs to planning your springtime garden layout, January offers a crucial opportunity for garden maintenance and strategising. Let's embark on this journey together, cultivating beauty and bounty in our outdoor sanctuaries.

• Think about purchasing water butts, rainwater will come useful in the summer.

• While trees and shrubs are still dormant, continue planting them.

• Think ahead to what you want in your hanging baskets for that year and get ordering before the busy period!

Mist your indoor plants regularly as the central heating can dry out the air.

• Start pruning your apple and pear trees whilst they're still dormant.

• Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies, this will stop them setting seed.

• Sort out your seeds, get rid of empty or out-of-date packets

• Top up bird baths with fresh water daily and melt ice with warm water on frosty days

• Make sure there is enough food for the birds, put some fat balls

• Move potted strawberry plants under cover to help encourage early fruiting

• Clear algae and moss and soggy leaves from paths, decking and steps
